An emerging new model of healthcare delivery and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act are creating an influx of new patients for many healthcare providers.
The accountable care organization model is driving the following changes:
- Gives organizations more accountability for managing the care of populations
- Puts primary care physicians (PCPs) at the center of the care continuum
- Encourages patients to select a PCP rather than using the emergency department (ED) as their care entry point
- Puts a greater emphasis on reducing ED visits by focusing on preventive medicine
The PPACA, which follows the ACO model, is increasing the overall number of the insured and thus patient volume for a typical provider.
